Toasted Benne Wafers
Sesame, brown sugar, butter, thin and crisp.

Where this comes from
Benne seed came over with enslaved Africans and was planted at field edges for luck.
Ingredients
- 1 cup toasted benne (sesame) seeds
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Pinch salt
Method
- 011. Toast seeds in a dry pan until fragrant. Cool.
- 022. Cream butter and sugar, beat in egg and vanilla.
- 033. Fold in flour, baking powder, salt, and seeds.
- 044. Drop teaspoons far apart on parchment; they spread.
- 055. Bake 350F for 8-10 minutes until lace-edged. Cool fully to crisp.
